Postcard Chain: Card #3

Katie sent her postcard from Brussels.
"In my last week in Brussels, I am thinking about silence + stillness and how my perception of things has changed throughout my European adventures --

Katie Swords"
--Brussels, Belgium

Sentences in response:

"Since hearing your story at the 92nd St. Y's "From the Horse's Mouth" performance, I keep thinking about the choreography all around us - the shifting patterns of people coming together and moving apart, and how the simplest of gestures by a single person can trigger a lengthy imagined narrative."
-- New York, NY

And sentences in response to those:

"The things we don't know -- who is she? where is he going? what is she thinking? what does she love and believe in and want to do next? -- are as important as what we do know; our challenge is to make space for the mysterious underpinnings to breathe and move us forward, even when we don't know the next step."

Adrienne”

-- Brooklyn, NY

Postcard Chain: Card #1

Abrazos,

Janice"

Sentences in response:

"Dreaming of sun in the frigid ice-waste of February, watching the black churning waters of the Hudson flowing in search of warmer climes."
-- New York, NY

"Outside my apt. window my NYC backyard is blanketed in snow. the large bush looks like a mass of underwater while coral, the black bark of the tree stark against the white. A single bird sits on the chain length fence sheltered under the bush branches. I love the snow in NYC - when it first falls."
-- New York, NY

"A sunny day in the midst of the cold brings promise of better days ahead."
-- Barnardsville, NJ

"Today I awake in a large wooden house, red oven mitts on the counter, trees forested out the window, and coffee in the pot."

And sentences in response to those:

"The magical beauty of the landscape makes me want to romp in park or even walk miles instead of relying on public transportation. Should I dig out my car? Where is my car? Is it parked on the proper side of the street for when they eventually re-enact alternate side of the street parking?"

Inspiration in Paris, Nancy and Brussels

Greetings from Brussels (again!) -- although this time we (Janice, Katie, Adrienne and the 5 other members of our Hollins/ADF MFA class) are back, after great time in Paris researching at the Center National de la Danse and the Centre Pompidou, and performing in Nancy and the CCN-Ballet de Lorraine. I discovered this video there, which also seems to have something to do with what I'm thinking about:

By now you should have received Janice's postcard from Argentina, and mine from Paris should arrive sometime next week. If you're not a member of the postcard chain yet but would like to be, click here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s_thankyou.aspx?sm=6ujUy31jsmjsynAn29%2bw3h2u8vS3RORdv4CQTDjuyyo%3d

Greetings from Brussels!

Hello all! Greetings from Brussels, where I just joined with the rest of the Hollins/ADF MFA folks at Nadine; still nursing my calf back to health after injuring it two weeks ago, but all and all a good day and it felt good to dance (the first of a four day workshop with Clinton Stringer!) Last week, Seth and I had great travels in Berlin and Amsterdam; one highlights for me was discovering the above work (which moves -- each carousel of miniatures rotates) by Hans Peter Feldmann, SCHATTENSPIEL (Shadow Play), at the Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin. If I were to write you a postcard with a sentence today it would be:
"chilly and sore, but with good company -- and surprised by how much french I understand!"

Welcome to Far Away/Back Home Again -- chronicling our travels throughout 2010!

This new dance work will explore the concept of representing our home city when traveling while bringing traces of places visited home with us. The work will be based on the content of a giant postcard chain sent in the months before our residency, initiated by VIA and sent throughout our Manhattan home and abroad.
